They’re chewing bacteria gum in Canada
After chewing the idea over, I came to the conclusion that there has to be a better way to fight infections than stuffing bacteria-filled gum into my mouth. A Canadian company recently introduced a new bacteria-filled gum. Probiotic Gum – sold for $8 a pack at health food stores in Canada — contains “friendly” bacteria that are said to combat infections, ear aches and bad breath.
But how friendly can bacteria really get? Imagine about 500 million active Streptococcus salivarius bacteria having a party in your mouth. That’s what the gum contains. According to experts quoted in The Gazette newspaper, this bug type (Streptococcus salivarius) produces antibacterial substances that can kill certain bad bacteria.
It sounds a bit unsavory, but maybe this will catch on. But till that happens, I’m going to stick to the classic methods of killing bad bacteria in my mouth – a toothbrush and Listerine. Would you try bacteria gum?
