Would you drive without car insurance?
How many drivers do you think are on the road without car insurance? Nearly one in three consumers believe that at least 40 percent of drivers have no car insurance, according to a survey by Direct General, an auto insurance provider.
But so far these fears haven’t been substantiated. The Insurance Research Council (IRC) estimates that 13.8 percent of drivers were uninsured in 2007 and projected that number to rise to 16.1 percent in 2010. Even in states with an alarming proportion of uninsured drivers, the number hasn’t been close to pushing 40 percent. New Mexico (29 percent), Mississippi (28 percent) and Alabama (26 percent) have the most uninsured drivers, according to IRC.
Perhaps people feel there are so many uninsured drivers because they themselves would do it. If you lost your car insurance, would you continue to drive? Thirty-six percent of people said they would, according to Direct General’s survey.

Aug 07, 09 at 9:46 amI never drove without car insurance. But, when times were tough, I lowered my liability limits to the bare minimum required by my state. So, I could have been underinsured if I had gotten into a serious accident. It’s tough to predict what people will do in tough economic times.

Aug 07, 09 at 9:44 amI know a few people who keep driving and brag about how they dropped their car insurance. Why can’t the states keep track of who has a registered car but no insurance? Insurance comapnies should have to report someone who cancels or the rest of us have to pay for their accidents.
