Teen drivers sock it to insurance bills
Adding a teen driver to your car insurance policy can be one of the most expensive changes you’ll ever make. Because of their inexperience behind the wheel and high accident rates, teens are always considered “high-risk” drivers and their parents pay accordingly.
Fortunately, you usually don’t have to add your teen to your policy until he has his driver’s license. That means during the “permit” months, you’re getting a break on a teen who’s driving.
Sometimes an insurer will automatically add the new driver for you – by watching for either the teen’s 16th birthday or the date of the learner’s permit expires. If your teen does not receive his driver’s license at the anticipated time, notify your insurer so that you can stave off the bigger bill longer.
